Backwaters are the most popular tourist attraction in
Kerala.
Kerala with as many as 44 rivers crisscrossing the land
finally being drained into the Arabian Sea in the east is a
spectacular backwater haven with its wide network of lakes,
canals, estuaries and deltas providing both breathtaking
visuals as well as leisure hideaways to visitors. There are
several such unique palm-fringed, tranquil water-locked
regions in Kerala, once the state's trade highways, now
providing tourists with facilities like cruises, houseboats
and resorts that helps one to really get in touch with nature,
wildlife, and the life in rural Kerala.
Backwaters in Kumarakom, a small village which is a
cluster of little islands on the Vembanad Lake is a place of
great enchantment. The boat rides, houseboat cruises available
here takes you through a world of breath-taking greens and
blues, through a bird sanctuary, a favorite haunt of both
migratory birds as well as ornithologists.
Backwaters in Alleppey often referred to as the Venice
of the East by travelers from around the world, is famous for

Backwaters in Kochi are star studded with a string of
picturesque and lovely islands, swaying coconut palm trees,

Backwaters in Kollam start on the banks of Ashtamudi

longest backwater tour in Kerala.
Backwaters in Trivandrum consist of numerous lagoons,
lakes, canals and rivers with thick tropical vegetation on
both sides and a cruise along this stretch is indeed a unique
liberating experience. Thiruvallam a serene backwater stretch
which is a meeting point of two rivers, 6 kms from Trivandrum
enroute to Kovalam is famous for its canoe rides. A temple
dedicated to Parashurama, the legendary founder of Kerala, is
also situated in Thiruvallam. Veli Tourist Village 8 kms from
Trivandrum bordered by the Veli lagoon separated from the sea
by a narrow sand bar and the Arabian Sea provides facilities
like water sports, waterfront park with a floating bridge that
connects the village to the beach etc.
Backwaters in Kottayam are blessed with immense natural
beauty having Vembanand Lake on the east, the famous Kuttanad,
on the west and being sprawled amidst the mighty Western Ghats.
This serene and calm backwaters with sparkling blue water
surrounded by lush green paddy fields and extensive rubber
plantations is a perfect setting for an unforgettable
experience, which will never fail to enchant its visitors.
