Most of India's
finest beaches are in Kerala with her entire 900kms lined-up
with gold and white sandy beaches, unending stretches of blue
water, tall palm trees swaying in the breeze and rocks dotted
shores, and is a perfect holiday destination one would love to
unwind in.
Varkala Beach also an important Hindu place of
pilgrimage is home to some of keralas best beach resorts. A
dip in the Azure waters here is believed to purge the body and
soul of all sins and hence is also called 'Papanashini'. Rich
mineral springs rising majestically from high cliffs here are
well known for their medicinal value. The 2000 year old
Janardana Swamy Temple and the Nature Center are the two main
attractions in Varkala Beach.
Alleppey Beach in Alappuzha is located 85 km from
Cochin. With the Arabian Sea to its west and a vast network of
lakes, lagoons and several freshwater rivers meshed in
between, Alappuzha is a district of immense natural beauty.
Alappuzha is also home to diverse animal and bird life. The
Alappuzha beach is one of the most popular spots here, with
the 140 years old pier extending into the sea.
Some of the best water sport facilities are available on the
Alappuzha beach. Swimming and surfing are very popular among
tourists. Beach volleyball, water scooter and high speed boats
are also available. The Vijaya beach park here constructed for
entertainment purpose of families offers facilities like
Boating, childrens-park, toy train and bicycle riding. There
is a lighthouse on the beach, which attracts a lot of
tourists.
The Kappad Beach 16 kms from Kozhikode is a typical
beach of north Kerala where the shoreline is more rocky than
sandy. This is where Portuguese navigator Vasco da Gama
(1460-1524) landed in India for the first time. The sandy
stretch of beach here offers opportunities for sand castle
building and other beach activities which are quite popular.
Fort Kochi Beach 2 kms from the Boat Jetty of Ernakulam,
on an island has a tinge of French atmosphere with the
restaurants and forts surrounding the place. The beach has
more of rocks than sand. One needs to get to a place called
Vypeen from Fort Cochi to access the Sandy Beaches.
Poovar Beach is an unspoilt and unexplored island,
enveloped by the most serene backwaters, and opening out to
the sea and a dream golden sand beach. Poovar is truly a
window into paradise. Time stopped a few decades ago bowing to
the sheer beauty of Poovar. The tranquility of Poovar is
punctuated by the sound of waves and the birds. The area is
abundant in well-preserved local flora, with hundreds of
species of spices, exotic flowers, complete with banana and
coconut groves. The Poovar beach separates the river from the
sea and is quite breathtaking. Because of the active fishing
population the beach is not really used as a sunbathing spot
or for swimming as the currents are quite strong.
Shanghumugham Beach a favorite haunt of sunset viewers
is a popular city beach near Trivandrum airport. This beach of
Kerala makes a refreshing holiday option for the city
dwellers. Several recreational facilities are available here.
This beach of Kerala wears a festive look during the temple
festivals.
Payyambalam Beach is the beach of Kannur town. The well
laid out garden and the massive landscaped sculpture of mother
& child erected by noted sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman makes it
extremely captivating. This beautiful stretch of sand and surf
is the best locale for a relaxed evening and is a popular
picnic spot of the local people and holds much potential for
development into a tourist resort. Nearby is Ezhimala, the
capital of the ancient Mooshika kings, considered to be an
ancient historical site. It is a conspicuous, isolated cluster
of hills, forming a promontory.
Valapattanam Beach 7 km from Kannur town is known for
its natural harbor where trawlers and fishermen bring in their
catch of fish every morning and also is an irrigation project
in the district.
Bekal Fort Beach, Kasaragod known for its solitude has
inspired many filmmakers to shoot, most notable being the
movie Bombay, shot in 1994 at this place. This Beach is
popular for its pristine location and the scenic backdrop of
the historic Fort. The imposing circular fort at Bekal is one
of the largest and best preserved forts in Kerala.
Kappil Beach offers views of the calm sea and space for
relaxation on the clean sandy stretches leading down to the
Arabian Sea.
Thirumullavaram Beach 6 km north of Kollam town is a
calm escape from the busy town, where tourists can enjoy the
sea breeze as well as search for seashells swept in by the
incoming tide.
Kozhikode Beach is a popular spot where residents of Kozhikode
town, come out to relax and enjoy themselves in the evenings.
The view of the sunset is worth seeing.
Mararikulam Beach derives its name from the name of a
local fishing village shrouded in antiquity and ancient
traditions.
Beypore Beach is the one beach you can sunbathe
peacefully, without any hawkers overlooking your swim suit.
Muzhapilangad Beach 8 km from Thalasseri in Kannur
district in North Kerala is a 4 km long stretch of palm
fringed beach. The beach is a popular venue for film shoots in
Kerala.
Chowara Beach 9 kms south of the renowned Kovalam Beach, is
the hot spot for the nature and leisure travelers. The beach
is the picture perfect combination of nature where you can
enjoy lush the gorgeous greens, whispering sea breeze and the
murmuring surf. This beach of Kerala is a "must visit", it
home to renowned heritage and Ayurvedic resorts.
Kovalam Beach 16 km outside Trivandrum City are three
beaches. The southern most and the most popular beach, is the
Lighthouse Beach. The middle beach is called Hawah and the
northern most is called Samudra. In Kovalam there are a number
of beach resorts in and around. Kovalam is finding a new
significance in the light of several Ayurvedic salons, and
recuperation and regeneration resorts which provide a slew of
Ayurvedic treatments for the tourists.
