Kerala being flanked with blue waters of Arabian Sea on the
east and beautiful mountain ranges Western Ghats on the west
has some of the best enchanting Hill stations in the country.
Amidst sprawling plantations with clear blue sky and gentle
refreshing breeze combined with panoramic view makes one’s
stay in the Kerala Hill stations an exhilarating experience.
Munnar is a breathtakingly beautiful haven of peace and
tranquility making it the idyllic tourist destination in God's
own country. Munnar hills situated at the confluence of three
mountain set at an altitude of 6000 ft amidst unending expanse
of tea plantations, pristine valleys and mountains, exotic
species of flora and fauna, picture book towns, winding lanes,
and holiday facilities makes this a popular resort town.
Anamudi in Munnar is the highest peak (2695 mts) south
of the Himalayas, towers over the Eravikkulam National Park.
The slopes of the hills abound in all kinds of rare flora and
fauna. The Atlas moth, the largest of its kind in the world,
is a unique inhabitant of the park. Other rare species of
fauna found here are the nilgiri langur, the lion-tailed
macaque, leopards, tigers, etc. An ideal place for trekking,
facilities are provided here and tourists are allowed to go on
foot up to Anamudi.
Devikulam Hill Station, 7 kms from Munnar, is a
picturesque hill station with carpeted lawns, exotic flora and
fauna and misty air. The Sita Devi Lake with its mineral
waters and picturesque environs is a good picnic spot. The
lake is also ideal for fishing.
Mattupetti Hill Station, 13 km from Munnar on a height
of 1700 mts is famous for its highly specialized dairy farm,
the Indo-swiss live stock project. Over 100 varieties of high
yielding cattle are reared here. Visitors are allowed into
three of the eleven cattle sheds at the farm. The Mattupetti
Lake and dam, just a short distance from the farm, is a very
beautiful picnic spot.
Lock Heart Gap 13 km from Munnar is an ideal place for
adventure tourism and trekking with its fresh mountain air,
mist-clad hills and panoramic view.
Echo Point 15 km from Munnar gets its name from the
natural echo phenomenon here. Echo point is on the way to Top
Station from Munnar.
Kundala 20 km from Munnar is a picturesque town on the
way to Top Station. The Golf Course belonging to Tata Tea Ltd.
is here. The Kundala artificial dam is another attraction.
Aruvikkad Waterfall is also near Kundala.
Chithirapuram Hill Station 10 kms from munnar with its
sleepy little cottages bungalows, old playgrounds and courts
still exudes an old world charm. Home of the Pallyvasal Hydel
Power Project, this hill town is also famous for its
picturesque tea plantation.
Peruvannamuzhi Hill Station 60 km from Kozhikode with
the Peruvannamuzhi dam site set amid hills is a beautiful
picnic spot. The uninhabited Island, a bird sanctuary and a
crocodile farm add to the charm of the place. The region
offers immense scope for picnicking. The reservoir here
provides facilities for speedboat and rowboat cruises during
which one can see the 'Smaraka Thottam', a garden built in the
memory of the freedom fighters of the region.
Nelliyampathy Hill Station, 52 kms from Palakkad on the
ranges of Nelliyampathy, consists of a chain of ridges cut off
from one another by valleys. The highest peak is Nellikota.
Here you can also find estates of tea, coffee, orange and
cardamom.
Ponmudi Hill Station, 1000 mts above sea level is a
beautiful, peaceful hill station situated 61 kms from
Trivandrum. This hill station is a welcome break from the rush
of the city where you can relax in the laps of nature.
Lakkidi Hill Station located in Lakkidi, the gateway of
Wayanad, is situated 700 mts above sea level. Lofty peaks,
gurgling streams and luxuriant forests add magic to the
journey up the winding roads to this hill station. Lakkidi is
one of the highest locations in Wayanad, and registers the
second highest degree of Rainfall in the world.
Chembra Peak Hill Station 14 kms west of Kalpetta is on
the highest peak of western ghats in Wayanad at 2100mts above
sea level. You can trek your way to the top of this peak.
Tourists can also stay one or two days at the top of the peak
in temporary camps. District Tourism Promotion Council
provides guides, sleeping bags, canvass huts trekking
implements on hire charges to the tourists. The blue water in
the lake at the top of the hill never dries up even in the
peak of summer.
