Lakes and Waterfalls in Kerala


There are 34 lakes in Kerala. Some of the best lakes and waterfalls here are,

Sasthamkotta Lake known as the ‘queen of lakes’ has a fresh Water Lake spread over the area, situated 29 kms away from Kollam.

Vembanad Lake, the vivid blue and green palm fringed backwaters of Kottayam is a main tourist attraction having many facilities like boating, canoeing, fishing and sight seeing.

Alappuzha considered to be a prime locality for backwater tourism and angling, has several canals and lakes fit for boat cruises. A ride by boat or by country craft from Changanassery to Alappuzha through Punnamada Lake provides an unforgettable sight of some of the paddy fields and stretches of coconut palm groves.

Pookkode the fresh Water Lake surrounded by lush green forests, is located between Lakkidi and Pookkode and is about 2000 mts above sea level. There is boating a facility for tourists in the lake.

Ashtamudi Lake is another important lake in Kerala located in Kollam district. It is called Ashtamudi because of its eight 'mudis'(channels). Kalladayar is an important river that flows into this lake. Through the Neendakara estuary Ashtamudi Lake finds its way into the sea.

Thomankuttu and Rainbow Waterfalls are located at a distance of 20 and 25 km from Thodupuzha. This waterfall is an ideal destination for all those who love to picnic in a natural surrounding.

Power House Waterfalls on the way to Thekkady from Munnar cascades down steep rocks 2000 mts above sea level.

The Cheeyappara located between Neriamangalam and Adimali on the Kochi - Madurai highway, cascades down in seven steps. This is a great place for trekking. Valara waterfalls are 10 km from Adimali on the same route. Valara has a chain of waterfalls surrounded by thick green forests.

10 Kms from Munnar, located between Munnar and Rajamala Nyamkad is Nyayamakad Waterfalls. The Water cascading down a hill from a height of about 1600 meters and the enchanting surroundings make an excellent picnic spot and trekking point.

Palaruvi waterfall cascading 300 ft. down the hills surrounded by blue hills and green valleys is an ideal picnic spot. 4 km away from Aryankavu is the 300 ft high Aryankavu Falls which is like white thin threads of water. The water from the falls collects in a small pond below and flows out. Bathing is allowed in the pond. A nature-shower bath is the most unforgettable experience here.

The Kesari waterfalls is a 3 hr journey from Kottayam by any bus to Kumuly and trekking to Kuttikanan near here offers additional adventurous spirit and closeness to nature.

The Maramala Waterfalls is a few Kms away from Eerattupetta, exactly 7 kms from Teekoy rubber estate. From here only a private vehicle can take you down the further 2 Kms of road, in which no other vehicle can ply. To reach the falls one must trek through the estate over the rocky path. The waterfalls about 60 mts heigh, falls into a 12-meter deep pool to join the River Teekoy down below.

Aruvikkuzhi Waterfalls near Kottayam, is a beautiful picnic spot where streams tinkle as they make their way through the landscape and waters roar as they cascade down the mountains from a height of 100 ft. You can also enjoy the shade of the rubber plantations here.

Athirapally Waterfalls located 78 kms from Kochi located at the entrance of Sholayar ranges is about 80ft. high and being in the forest area is a popular picnic spot.

The Vazhachal waterfall is a scenic and popular waterfall on the edge of the Sholayar forest range. Its cool, misty waters cascading down with the backdrop of thick green forest and rocky terrain are a scintillating experience for visitors.

Dhoni Waterfalls near Palakkad is a long climb of 3-hour trek from the base of Dhoni Hills. This forest reserve area with its small, beautiful waterfall attracts tourists all through the year.

Meenvallam Waterfalls the ten-step nature’s bounty of cascading waters with height varying from five to fourty mts being tapped to produce electricity where beauty converges with utility is a breathtaking sight.

Aruvi Waterfalls near Thiruvananthapuram and 7 kms from Bonecaud estate in the Peppara forest range is a 4 feet cascade of water in one of most verdant and untouched spots in Kerala. Road accessibility is only up to Bonecaud, there on the Kanni tribesmen accompany trekkers along the mountain path. Prior permission from the forest department is required for approaching the area.

Kombaikani and Meenmutti Waterfalls are two magnificent waterfalls on the upper reaches of the Neyyar Reservoir. A trek of 2 kms through dense forests, would take one to Meenmutti waterfalls and a further 2 kms, to the Kombaikani waterfalls.

Thusharagiri Waterfalls snuggled cozily in the Western Ghats exhibits a unique kinship between land and water.

Meenmutty Waterfalls of 12 kms east of Meppadi falls to a depth of more than 500m in 3 steps. Trekking equipments are available at Tourist Information Center, Kalpetta.

Chethalayam Waterfalls near Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, Sulthan Bathery is a lovely place to which one has to trek a distance of around 4 kms. Near here you can see elephants, spotted deer, guar, sambhar and sloth bear.

Kanthanpara Waterfalls located in Wayanad District set amid lush green tea gardens with water plunging to a depth of 99 ft is a spectacular sight and a popular picnic spot.

Sentinal Rock Water Fall located south of Kalpetta is a three step water fall of more than 200mts height with fantastic scenery providing white water rafting, swimming, bathing, etc. The tree top huts at Soochipara will give unique view of the valleys of the Western Ghats. It is also an ideal place for rock climbing.

Soochipara Waterfalls is another beautiful waterfall in Wayanad, which can be seen from afar, which is a beautiful sight. To reach the waterfall, one has to trek down 2kms through dense equatorial forest over steep rocks.

Mulamkuzhi Waterfalls in a tiny village near Malayattur with crystal clear medicated water of the River Mulamkuzhi and the waterfalls of Venanbravady near Malayattur is an enchanting sight. There is also a confluence of the rivers Periyar and Perumthode.

Perumthenaruvi Waterfalls a famous waterfall on the banks of the River Pamba with water flowing down a rocky bed into a ravine 60 to 100 feet deep is a favorite picnic spot.
