What is
Ayurveda?
Aryurveda, believed to be the world’s oldest medical systems
and the best aid in Relaxation & Rejuvenation originated in
India and has evolved here over thousands of years. The
selfless service of Ashtavaidyas’ (Ayurvedic practitioners) in
Kerala highly proficient in all the eight different branches
of Ayurvedic treatments have contributed tremendously to
Kerala’s rise as a prominent center for Ayurveda. Ayurveda is
considered a complementary and Alternative medicine. Many
therapies used in Aryurveda like herbs, Massages and Yoga are
also used on their own as a whole medical system in itself and
should be undertaken only under proper guidance.
The aim of Ayurveda is to integrate and balance the body,
mind, and spirit to bring harmony in ones self, which is
believed to help prevent illnesses and improve wellness in a
person. The Ayurvedic Philosophy is that people, their
surroundings (The Universe) and their health are all
inter-related and any imbalance in these can result in ill
health. Products like Herbs and Metals and techniques like
Massages are used to cleanse the body of toxins and impurities
and restore balance.
Many Ayurvedic practices were handed down through generations
by word of mouth and were used even before there were any
written records. Two ancient Sanskrit books on palm leaves,
namely ‘Charaka Samhita’ and ‘Shusruta Samhita’ believed to be
2000 years old, are thought to be the first texts on the
subject.
Basic beliefs and principles underlying Ayurveda
All things in the universe (Living & Non-living) are
interconnected and is a complete whole.
All living things including humans are made up of the same
five elements that make the universe namely Space (Akash),
Earth (Bhoomi), Water (Jal), Air (Vaayu) and Fire (Agni).
Every living thing has an innate state of balance within in
relation to the universe.
Disruptions that are Physical, Emotional and Spiritual or a
combination of these happening during our daily interactions
in life results in overall imbalance resulting in weakening of
the body and give rise to diseases.
Effective and wholesome interaction with one’s surroundings
can help in maintaining good health.
When a person is not in harmony within himself and with the
surroundings illnesses occur.
About one’s constitution and health
A person’s
general health referred to as ones constitution decides how
likely the person tends to fall sick and how much he is able
to resist and recover from the onslaught.
Any person’s basic constitution or ‘Prakriti’ as refered to in
Ayuveda is constant over a life time.
Three qualities called Doshas form important characteristics
of the constitution that control the body.
It is believed that a person’s chances of developing certain
types of diseases are related to the way doshas are imbalanced
in relation to the physical body, mental status and the
lifestyle.
The various treatment methods in Ayurveda fall under the
following categories,
Cleansing
Massaging
Medication
Yoga & Meditation
Through proper analysis of a person’s constitution and by
measuring the proportions of Dosha’s, diagnosis and even
prevention of diseases can be affected.
