Kerala, being blessed with abundant, rich, forest cover and natural resources is also equally rich in exotic wildlife. The wildlife sanctuaries spread over various parts of the state provide refuge to multitude of wild animals and birds and also facilitate our visitors to see them at close quarters in their natural surroundings. There are about 12 Wildlife sanctuaries and two National Parks in Kerala. In the dense forests of Periyar and Rajamala, you may chance upon elephants, gaur, sambar, deer, Nilgiri Tahrs, langur and a wide variety of birds and reptiles.

These sanctuaries being located in wilder parts of the state also makes them ideal locations for adventure sports. Many adventure activities are arranged in these locations for the benefit of the tourists.

In Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Thekkady, Elephant rides into the jungle are available. A mahout will guide you on your enchanting journey. Also you can join the Thekkady tiger trail, a real adventure trek into the dense forest with expert guides. Also you can camp out.

Take Boat rides to watch wildlife at close quarters from the safety of a boat at the sanctuaries of Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary and Periyar Tiger Reserve. Herds of wild elephants bathing in the lake, the Indian bison digging his horns into an unaffected tree, the cormorant darting into the waters are all a welcome treat for photographers.

Enjoy a close encounter with the endangered Nilgiri Tahr half the world population of which lives in the Eravikulam National Park at Munnar. They are very friendly to the extent that you can even pat them and pose with them for pictures. The Eravikulam National Park is also home to an assortment of wildlife such as the Nilgiri Langur, Sambhar, Gaur and the Lion-tailed Macaque.

Not all places to visit in Kerala are on well traveled roads. Some may have no roads at all. Hike up rugged terrains at Munnar, Wayanad and Kakkayam (Kozkikkod). If you haven’t tried rock climbing before, the experts here will teach you the tricks.

Sweep across the lush green hills of Munnar on a paraglide enjoying the wind beneath your wings and feeling on top of the world.

Spend romantic nights in the tree houses of Palakkad awash with sweet scents of forest flowers, and sounds of forest.

Embark on an enchanting journey across sun-dappled backwaters on a kettuvallom or Houseboat, a fully furnished traditional rice boats. While your eyes explore the rustic life that floats by, treat your palate to backwater delicacies prepared by your personal chef.

Spend a weekend on Kerala’s islands or lagoons, and experience special moments, spectacular sunset, balmy backwaters and succulent seafood at Bolghatty, Pathiramanal, Poovar etc. These paradises can be reached only by a ferry or boat.
