Kannur the favorite destination of the intrepid traveler is a
land with a resonant past. Even though there are no evidence
of the Paleolithic Man having lived in this region, the
rock-cut caves and Megalithic burial sites of the Neolithic
age have been discovered in certain parts of the district. The
Taliparamba-Kannur-Thalassery area abounds in these kinds of
findings. Such is the deep history buried here and places of
historical importance are plenty.
Arakkal Palace is one such place steeped in History. It was
the palace of the Beebi (Queen) of Arakkal, the one and only
Muslim Royal family that had controlled parts of Kerala coast
and even Lakshadweep.
Fort St. Angelo was built in 1505 AD by Don Francisco D.
Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India, which had
after going through many hands finally reached the British.
The barracks, the magazine, cannons and the ruins of a chapel
are all still standing the test of time.
Beautiful and ancient Madayi Mosque originally built in the
1124 AD has a block of white marble believed to have been
brought from Mecca. by Malic Iben Dinar, a Muslim preacher who
came to India to spread the word of the prophet.
Pazhassi Gardens, Dam and Reservoir is a scenic store house.
Cruises are the best way to get close to the riverine birds.
The Buddha’s mountain at Pazhassi, sculpture of Pazhassi King
are added interests in the place.
Dharmadam Island located near the Muzhappilangad beach
surrounded by rivers and sea is actually a conjunction of a
beach and island and can be reached by walk during low tide.
The Ezhimala Mountain, the strange seven-peaked range, is
famous for a rare medicinal herb (Ramayana) which has
mythological significance. The other attractions here are the
old tower and the Mount Deli lighthouse which is maintained by
the Navy and hence a restricted area.
Aralam wild life sanctuary on the slopes of the Western Ghats
with tropical and semi evergreen forests is a safe haven for a
good number of wildlife and birds. In fact around 160 species
of birds have been found here including ones that are thought
extinct.
Paithal Mala is a hill about 1,372 metres above sea level and
a perfect trekking site with a base reception centre and a
watchtower atop the cliff functioning for the benefit of the
tourists.
Thalassery also known as ‘the cradle of Indian circus’ is the
place where the first Malayalam newspaper and the first
Malayalam dictionary where brought out. India's first
gymnastic training centre is also here.
Getting here
The nearest airport is at Karipur, Kozhikode, 120 km and
Mangalore airport 170 km away from Kannur. The Kannur railway
station on Mangalore- Shornore Sector is one of the major
stations in north Kerala and connects with all the major
cities. The N H 17 goes via Kannur, Thalassery- Virajpetta
route and another route available is the Kerala-Karnataka from
Kannur. Private passenger buses for intra-district services
are also available. KSRTC also operates buses to all parts of
the state and to Mangalore and Bangalore in Karnataka.
