Kollam once an international emporium is now a prosperous
commercial center. A good part of this district has forest
cover and some of the major rivers and lakes pass through this
place, making room for some of the best excursion and picnic
spots in the district. Some of the places worth visiting are,
Ochira, dedicated to the Universal Consciousness, this famous
pilgrim center does not have any Diety or Idol.
Amritapuri Ashram of spiritual Guru, “Amrithanandamayi Amma”
or Amma as she is lovingly called, is a beautiful temple on
the shores of the backwaters, where more than seven hundred
full time residents reside. This is a place one must try not
to miss.
A 144 feet tall Lighthouse in Thangasseri a seaside village of
historic importance has the ruins of an old Portuguese Fort
and Churches built in the 18th century.
Thirumullavaram beach is a secluded beach is a beautiful
picnic centre.
Mayyanad is noted for its shrines and temples. The most
important of the nine temples here, is the Subramanya temple
at Umayanallor.
Other places of interest here suitable for excursions and
picnic are Sasthamkotta, Kulathupuzha, Thenmala, Ariankavu,
Palaruvi Waterfalls. Canal cruises to the Munroe Island
village is the best of its kind in India which is for about 4
hrs.

Nearest Airport is Thiruvanathapuram(71 kms). Being an
important railhead of the southern railways, Kollam is well
connected with all major cities of the state. Also excellent
road network links Kollam to all major towns & cities. |
