Malappuram with a rich
culture and political heritage has several places of tourist,
ecological, religious and historical importance. Having a good
tradition in the field of art and culture many poets and
renowned writers hail from this district.
Kottakkal refered to as the cradle of Ayurveda has ‘Kottakkal
Aryavaidyasala’ the Famous Ayurvedic hospital and Rejuvenation
center.
Thirur associated with Wagon tragedy, the black day in the
history of freedom struggle is the place where poet Thunchath
Ezhuthachan, the father of Malayalam language, lived in the
16th century.
Palur is a fort built by Tippu worth visiting.
Nilambur is a small and beautiful sleepy town situated on the
banks of Chaliyar River and is a good place to relax.
Thanur was visited by St. Francis Xavier in the year 1546 and
is one of the first Portuguese colonies in the country.
Getting here
Calicut airport is at Karippur, 36 kms. away from the district
headquarters. The major railway stations here are Thirur and
Kuttippuram. The local passenger service is available on
Shornore-Nilambur line. Malappuram also has a KSRTC Bus
station which operates buses to all parts of the state.
Manjeri is the main city in the district. Bus services are
also available to Ootty from Nilambur via Gudalore and to
Bangalore from Malappuram.
