Palakkad the chief granary of Kerala often called the Gateway
to Kerala, lies at the foot of Western Ghats on the border of
Kerala. This is a place of tourist importance due to its
historical background and some of the picnic hot spots here
are,
The old Granite Fort built by Hyderali of Mysore in 1766
called Palakkad Fort situated in the very heart of Pallakad
town is one of the best preserved in Kerala. The fort was
taken over and modified by the British in 1790. It is now
preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India.
The famous picnic spot Malampuzha Gardens comprising of a dam
and beautifully landscaped Gardens is situated on the lower
hills of the Western Ghats.
Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary is home to rare wild animals.
The rest houses of the state forest department at
Thoonakkadavu, Thellikkal and Anappady offer accommodation. A
tree house in the reserve forest area in Thoonakkadavu has to
be booked in advance. The oldest teak tree, Kannimari is found
here.
Nelliyampathy is a fascinating hill station near here at a
height of 467 to 1572 mts above sea level. At least 10 hair
pin bends have to negotiated on the ghat road that passes
through the breathtaking evergreen forests of the Sahya
Ranges. Seethakundu at Nelliyampathy offers a panoramic view
of about one third of Palakkad. This hill country is the
delight of trekkers.
The other places of interest where excursions can be conducted
are Mangalam dam, Thrithala, Siruvani, Ottappalam, Lakkidi,
Kollengode.
Getting here
Nearest Airport is at Coimbatore (55 kms). Palakkad junction
railway station being a major railhead of southern railways,
is well connected with the rest of Kerala and India. Also an
excellent network of roads connects Palakkad to all the major
cities in India.
