Volvo Ocean Race 2008-2009 in Kochi
The much awaited historical event in the history of
Kochi is fast approaching. Volvo Ocean Race – the most
prestigious around –the- world marathon ocean yacht
racing competition, will be stopping over in Kochi
(Cochin) for the first time ever in its entire racing
history. The Cochin Port Trust is all geared-up to be
the host for this up coming event.
The race is scheduled to commence in October 2008 from
Alicante in Spain and expected to cover more than 39,000
nautical miles and 11 ports across the globe to finish
at St. Petersburg
Volvo Ocean Race, started in 1972, with just about 17
race yachts carrying 167 crew members from Portsmouth,
UK, has now turned into a complete global extravaganza
constituting teams drawn from across the globe. Seven
teams from countries like USA, Australia, Brazil,
Argentina, Holland, Sweden and Spain have already
enrolled in this race.
Considered to be one of the toughest of adventure
sports, this race involves some of the longest legs
through treacherous seas and demands highest endurance
skills from its participants. Due to its very
challenging nature, Volvo Ocean Race is also considered
the ultimate in extreme adventure sports.
The Kochi stopover is expected to be from December 3,
2008 to December 13, 2008. Several activities are
planned jointly by the Cochin Port Trust and the Kerala
State Tourism Department during this time. This event is
expected to have a great impact in the socio-economic
status of the country as a whole and Kochi in particular
and is going to be an excellent chance for Kochi to be
acknowledged as one of the much sought after leisure
tourism destinations in the world.
