Set in the lofty ranges of Western Ghats, Wayand is a
beautiful land of Paddy fields, coffee and pepper plantations
sprawling between picturesque hills and lovely valleys covered
with wild trees like rose-wood, Artocarpus (Anjili), Erthrina
(Mullumurikku), and several species of Caussia. The presence
of these wild trees gives the landscapes of Wayanad a look of
wilderness. The places to visit and enjoy this wild beauty
are,
Muthenga and Tholpetty are the two wildlife sanctuaries here.
Muthanga sanctuary is adjacent Bhandipur Sanctuary in
Tamilnadu. Teaming with elephants this sanctuary is a haven
for wildlife during the scorching summer. Herds of elephants
move to Muthenga from Bhandipur, during this period in search
of shade and water.
Thirunelly Vishnu Temple one of the oldest temples in South
India, is known as Southern Kasi. River Papanasini is near
here. River Kabani, a major tributary of Legendary Caveri,
also originates from the thick forest of 5276 ft high
Brahmagiri hills near here.
Pakshipathalam in the Brahmagiri valley is a natural nesting
site for birds including many rare species.
Pookodu Lake a major tourist hub in the district is a natural
lake tucked away in the hills providing paddling facilities on
country boats.
The tomb of Pazhassi Raja, who died a martyr's death in the
hands of British, rests here at Mananthavady.
Edakkal Caves in Ambalavayal contains some of the
pre-historical writings, so the Archeologists reason!
Getting here
The nearest airport is Calicut, 109 km from Kalpetta, the
district headquarters. The NH 212 (Kozhikode-Mysore) passes
via Kalpetta and Sulthan Bathery. KSRTC Bus Station in Sulthan
Bathery operates round-the-clock services to Kozhikode sector.
There are Buses to Bangalore and Mysore also from Sulthan
Bathery and Kalpetta. Interiors of the district are connected
to Kalpetta and Sulthan Bathery. Mananthavady is also
connected to Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery and Kozhikode.
